Building internet traffic

What's the truth about building internet traffic? Is it fast? Easy? Worth it?

Building traffic - the time element

We all like things to happen fast
I do, too. Impatience has ruined many a good website idea, as thwarted webmasters gaze disgustedly at their traffic stats and think...

"Nahhh... this isn't working - let's try something else!"

Flitting from one idea to the other isn't going to get you anywhere. Believe me, I'm somewhat of a butterfly myself, and I've done a fair bit of flitting from one website flower to the next.

It never hurts to try an idea out, of course. And knowing when to pack things in and start over can be a useful skill to master :)

But if you're convinced you've got a great idea for your website, and you've done your keyword research to check that there is good demand for your topic, then you'll have to be prepared to dig in and fight! And... wait.

How long does it take to start building internet traffic?

How much traffic do you want? How much do you need? For some sites, a few quality visitors a day could prove to be very profitable.

For others, up to a hundred visitors could suit.

Websites covering popular topics with lots of demand and not too much hot competition might expect to get a few hundred visitors to a thousand or more a day.

That kind of site would have lots of well-written content and lots of pages, too. You'd have to do your research to find a topic like that, but they do exist.

The time factor? Give your site a year at the very least. It can take this long to get all your pages indexed, and for them to start ranking well in the search engines.

Use the first year to build your site

While the search engines are still humming-and-hawwing about whether your site is worth featuring higher up in the rankings, they'll still be sending you a little traffic. In fact, you might be pleasantly surprised at the traffic you get in the first few months.

Or you might be wondering why you're not getting very many visitors at all.

Pages from your site could be sitting in Google's supplemental results index - and therefore not appearing in Google's main search results. Again, if this happens, you have to wait for them to shift into the main index - around a year or so in my experience.

What to do? Plenty!

  • Research more stuff
  • write pages
  • refresh some of your content pages now and again
  • add some graphics to pages
  • ... and let the search engines see that your site is alive-alive-oh!

Once you're happy with the basics of your site, you can start to work on building links, too.

And by the end of the year, even if you only build one page of good content a week, you'll have over 50 pages on your site - which isn't bad to start off with. 100 pages would be an even greater start.

The "easy" factor

Yes, building websites is easy, isn't it? You can register a domain name, write anything you want, and abracadabra - the whole thing's live on the net, and that's that!

Building internet traffic isn't so easy. You need to research a topic for your site to see what people are looking for. You need to plan a set of pages that will become the face of your site and business online - and then you need to think of a great domain name that will reflect just what your site is about.

Then you're looking at getting links. Setting up contact forms, or surveys or polls on the site, working on making your visitors feel welcome using contact forms, polls, surveys and so on, working on your blog if you have one...

... easy when you think about it, hard work in actual fact.

OK - that's time and work, but...

Is it worth it?

Now, obviously I am going to tell you that all this is worth it, or I wouldn't be sitting here telling you how to build internet traffic.

So - why is it worth it?

If you build

and work

and wait...

then you are determined. You will have spent a year looking at the competition, getting deeper into the internet niche that you have jumped into, and you will understand so much more about what you are doing and what you need to do next.

You will find out what works. What doesn't. And you will begin to understand the "secrets" of building internet traffic.
