Higher search engine ranks - getting links

Achieving higher search engine ranks doesn't just depend on writing good content and optimizing your pages.

It also relies to a certain extent on good, inpointing links to your site.

Search engine webmaster guidelines tell you that links to your site are important; and that participating in link schemes that are only aimed at increasing ranking and not about genuine visitor-friendly links into your site can actually damage your rankings.

So keep your link building strategy real, and don't try to trick the search engines.

Two types of links

There are basically two types of links that you can get to your site:

  • a reciprocal link - where you and another webmaster agree to exchange links. You give a link to a page on another site, and that site gives you a link back.

  • a one-way link into your site - here, another site gives a link to you. You don't link back to them.

Why do you need links into your site?

There are two main reasons to get other sites linking to yours.

The first concerns those higher search engine rankings.
Search engines will figure that if other good sites link to yours, your site must be worth looking at. And the more quality links you have into your site, the better. You might not get much traffic from the links themselves. But they can help push your pages higher up in the search engine rankings and deliver traffic that way.

The second is, of course, to get traffic!
If you have a link into your site on a well-visited page on another website, you can expect to get some traffic from it.

First steps in link building

Even if your site is fairly new, you can get started on a link building campaign. In fact, having a few inpointing links to your site right from the start not only helps search engines pick up your site faster, but will start getting you a little traffic too.

Here are some tips on building links from virtual communities.

Developing your link building efforts

Once your site has a good batch of meaty content, then you can think about the following:

  • writing articles
  • submitting your site to free and paid directories
  • participating in a few, carefully chosen link exchanges

Let's not forget... links out of your site

Higher search engine ranks won't be affected by some excellent quality links out of your site. Search engines want to see that you are linking to other quality sites that are relevant to your site's theme.
