Achieving higher search engine ranks doesn't just depend on writing good content and optimizing your pages.

Two types of links

There are basically two types of links that you can get to your site:

a reciprocal link - where you and another webmaster agree to exchange links. You give a link to a page on another site, and that site gives you a link back.
a one-way link into your site - here, another site gives a link to you. You don't link back to them.

There are two main reasons to get other sites linking to yours.

Search engines will figure that if other good sites link to yours, your site must be worth looking at. And the more quality links you have into your site, the better. You might not get much traffic from the links themselves. But they can help push your pages higher up in the search engine rankings and deliver traffic that way.

The second is, of course, to get traffic!
