More link building tips to improve search engine rank

If you want to improve search engine rank for pages on your site, here are three tried and tested ways of getting quality links into your site.

Distribute articles

Once you have some good sections of content on your site, you can consider writing an article about your site's topic. It doesn't have to be long, around 400 - 750 words or so.

My advice is not to use word-for-word content that is on your site. Keep all of the content on your site original. And write an original article, too. Distribute your article and include a link to your site.

Want to know where to get started?

I recommend EzineArticles.com - and it's not just articles for ezines they're after, but for websites too. It's run by a real human being as well, Christopher Knight - check out his blog or take a look at the forums. This site's an excellent resource.

Don't forget - a really good article will be picked up by good sites. And your article links back to your site. You don't have to write tons of articles. A few, well-written ones can provide excellent one-way links into your site for years, and help improve search engine ranks at the same time.

Submit your site to directories

Directories contain listings of websites usually categorized by topic and reviewed by humans. Acceptance of your website into quality directories gives you yet more good links into your site.

Two biggies:

Yahoo! Directory
You pay for this one - $299 dollars for each web site submitted, per year. This is only one to do if, of course, your site is worthy of being listed in the directory.

Find the correct category for your site and check out the other websites listed. Read the quality guidelines, which ask you among other things to provide a site that has unique content, no broken links, and that is accessible 24/7.

DMOZ/Open Directory Project
The DMOZ directory offers free submission. Many other search engines use DMOZ listings within their results. It's worth submitting... if you ever get in, that is. Being a free directory with human reviewers, it can take, weeks, months, or years to get listed.

Take time to find the right category for your site - if possible with an ODP editor listed at the bottom of the category page. Some might say that makes no difference, but why would you want to submit to a section that doesn't have an editor? It could mean an even longer delay in getting accepted.

Unfortunately, there are so many categories without editors that this might be impossible. There are editors who can add submissions to these categories - and you don't want to add your site to the wrong category. To sum up - research the directory well before you submit, read the guidelines carefully, craft your site's description as best you can... then wait.

Smaller directories are also worthwhile.
Applying to smaller directories can be free, or cost you up to $40 and above to submit. Remember to check each directory's submission guidelines first.

Here are two places to begin your directory research in earnest:

Arrange a few quality link exchanges

Engaging in a reciprocal link exchange is another way you can improve search engine rank - simply by finding a small number of quality sites within your field of interest with whom you can swap links.

It's best give a link from a good content page on your site that leads your visitors to another good content page on the other. And vice versa. "Links" pages often end up being huge lists of links nobody looks at. The point is not only to give a link out and get one back - but to provide something of value to your visitor.

Keep up the quality

Once your site is ready, spend a little time getting these quality links. How much they improve search engine ranks is not only up to the search engines - but up to you, too. Write a quality site the directories will want to link to. Write articles other sites will want to use. Simple, really :)
