A reciprocal link exchange is yet another chore on any webmaster's "to do" list.
It can be a bit of a headache, though! Exchanging links isn't the easiest task in the world.
Let's take a look at some tips on how to make this part of your job a little less painful.
Relevant links are important
Getting links from any old site isn't worth it. You may have received emails from other webmasters saying that they have put a link on their site to yours, and would like a link back.
It's tempting...
But then you take a look at their site - and see that it has nothing to do with your website's theme at all!
"The quantity, quality, and relevance of links count towards your rating... some webmasters engage in link exchange schemes and build partner pages exclusively for the sake of cross-linking, disregarding the quality of the links, the sources, and the long-term impact it will have on their sites."
If you're going to participate in a link exchange, choose a site that's relevant to yours at the very least!
How can you find quality sites to exchange links with?
You don't want to swap links with a spam site or what is known as a "bad neighborhood" - sites that promote mal or spyware, have been involved with phishing and so on.
If you're looking for an easy-to-manage, free link exchange program where the focus is on matching up high quality, mutually relevant sites, then do check out SiteSell's Value Exchangeservice.
It's easy to sign up to. Don't forget to download their excellent free ebook on that page called Make Your Links Work.
Think you've found a reciprocal link exchange partner?
Then discuss with each other how you will exchange links. Be imaginative...
Don't just stick the link to them on a "links" page
Don't let them do the same to you!
Find a page on their site that you can naturally link to from one of your pages
Get your partner to link from a different page of their site to some other page on yours
discuss whether you want to use domain names as the link text or use keywords
Less can be more... the higher the quality of sites you can find for a reciprocal link exchange, the less link exchanging you'll have to do! Quality is better than quantity, remember :)
